ArtWorks: Intro

3905_41846_0.pngThe computer is a tool that students can use to imitate the styles of artists. To that end, I have created some lessons on how to go about this using an AppleWorks Painting document. Enjoy! Create! And, have fun experimenting. Included below are some links to outside webpages displayed artwork from these artists.

Andy Warhol (1930-1987)
An American artist whose work included portraits of many famous people. His techniques included colouring these photographs in different ways. M. C. Escher (1889-1972)
A Dutch artist who was a genius at creating tessellations. A tessellation is a special kind of design made from shapes that fit together perfectly. Escher designed patterns with lizards, fish and birds that are amazing. Click here to view some of his work. Joseph Stella (1880-1946)
Stella was born in Italy and grew up in the United States. He was known for his line art using mixed media. Stella considered himself a futurist trying to show movement through a repetition of an image. Click here to view some of his work. Piet Mondrian (1872-1944)
A Dutch artist who was considered one of the most important figures in the development of abstract art. He wanted to create pictures to express thoughts and feelings. He used straight lines, squares, rectangles and simple colours—red, yellow, blue and white to form his creations. Click here to view some of his work. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
A Spanish artist, is one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. One of his paintings, Garçon à la Pipe, was auctioned for over $104.1 million USD at Sotheby’s in May, 2004! He developed the cubist style of painting which looks at all sides of an object at once. His faces looked like puzzle pieces. Warning: preview this site before showing students! Ted Harrison (1926- )
A Canadian artist, born in England, whose images of the Yukon have captured our hearts with their simple yet sophisticated pictures. Harrison uses bold colours and lines which lend well for students to mimic. He received the Order of Canada for his contributions to Canadian art. Click here to view some of his work. A Canadian First Nations artist, born in Greenville, B. C., whose paintings have been presented to world leaders including Queen Elizabeth. An artist from New York, who specializes in free flowing and geometric designs. His work has been silkscreened on his wife's chocolates and sold to the public from her chocolate shop located next door to his art gallery! Fun with concentric circles.
