Prepare Footage for Video Editing

Before you can begin editing, you'll need some video footage to work with. Most programs accept a variety of formats for video editing, as long as they are digital.

If you shot your video with a modern camcorder, using the mini-DV format, it should be easy to import the footage. If you want to edit analog video, such as something on a VHS tape, you'll need to convert it to a digital format before you can import for video editing.

Video Editing Tutorials
Most video editing programs also offer lessons and guides to get you started video editing.

Video Editing Tips
No matter what video editing program you use, there are some tips and tricks that will improve your video editing. Having the right computer, software and accessories is essential, but in the end great video editing will come from practice and patience. Have fun!

Emailing Photos from iPhoto with FirstClass

Step 1: Export your photo(s) from iPhoto. During this process, shrink their size to no more the 1024x768 (smaller if possible depending upon the use later on).  Click here for tutorial

Step 2: Create a new email message. Choose Attach file. Navigate to the exported photo(s) and select them. Send email.

Step 3: After the email has successfully been sent, delete it. Keeping sent emails with large attachments will unnecessarily fill up your email space quota.

Digital Photos in the Classroom

ICT Applied Skills 1.1
It can be argued that learning Visual Literacy is equally as important as learning traditional literacy for today's students.  "A picture is worth a thousand words." The use of digital pictures amplifies this truth many times over. Most students know how to use a digital camera. However, using it well and with skill will be the focus of this workshop. After images are captured, the need arises to effectively manage those photos, enhance them, and repurpose them as learning objects. The use of digital cameras and Photo Management Software* will stimulate and motivate both students and teachers.

Teachers will learn:

  • how to use Photo Management Software to capture photos from cameras, scanners, and other sources
  • how to use Photo Management Software to create books, slideshows, photo galleries, and calendars
  • how to use these skills in their classroom with their students
  • how using digital imagery can energize and encourage students to learn

This workshop is three hrs long and will take place as two, 1.5 hr classes.

*Photo Management Software focused on will be either PicasaiPhoto or both if time permits.

Time: April 12 and 19 ~ 3:30 - 5:00 PM

Digital Audio in the Classroom

ICT Applied Skills 1.2
Today's computers have the ability to record audio much the same way they record the written word through typing. Using audio in the classroom is an emerging technology that has great potential to enhance student learning, especially those who are "auditorily" oriented.  iPods equipped with microphones will be demonstrated. The devices can be used to help students express ideas, record their oral reading development, and capture audio for use in a multitude of projects. Programs such as GarageBand* and Audacity are free and can become powerful, yet easy-to-use, tools for recording students' voices.

Teachers will learn:

• how to use iPods with microphones, as well as other audio inputs, to capture high quality audio.
• how to use  Garageband to take a variety of audio sources and mix them to create a finished product.
• how to produce a simple "radio show" called a PodCast.
• how to use these skills in their classroom with their students
• how using digital audio projects can energize and encourage students to learn

*Garageband ships free of charge with every new Apple Macintosh computer.

This workshop is three hrs long and will take place as two, 1.5 hr classes.

Time: April 26 and May 3 ~ 3:30 - 5:00 PM

Location: Digital Learning Centre @ CORE (Google Maps)

Digital Video in the Classroom

ICT Applied Skills 1.3
The Video Editing Software that is available on most computers today is powerful and highly engaging for both students and teachers. Programs such as Windows Movie Maker or iMovie can help students share their knowledge and express themselves in the form of digital video. For example, students can create video reports to demonstrate abstract science concepts, documentaries to deepen their understanding of social issues or just capture an example of their ability to read a book.

Teachers will learn:

• how to capture video from cameras as well as online sources
• basic video editing skills preparing their project for publishing
• about sharing their video projects in a variety of ways
• how to use these skills in their classrooms with their students
• how using digital video can energize and encourage students to learn

This workshop is three hrs long and will take place as two, 1.5 hr classes.

Time: May 10 and 17 ~ 3:30 - 5:00 PM
