Making Digital Soup with iMovie

What kind of soup do we want to make?

In this stage of the project we decide what the topic of the project will be. Ask you students to gather media around a topic. You may want them to gather media having to do with an environmental issue such as global warming. Click here to view the photos and video clips for the workshop

Selecting Ingredients for the Soup

Digital Ingredients can take many forms. They can include still images, video, and sound files.

Still Images are best stored in iPhoto. When you find one you like, either drop it into iPhoto or from Safari, Right-Click on an image and choose Add image to iPhoto. If you have taken photos with a digital camera, you can import them into iPhoto simply by plugging in the camera. Photo CD's can also be imported by dragging the images on them into the iPhoto window.

Video is becoming more and more prevalent because of the proliferation of camera phones. iMovie accepts any video format that can be played in Quicktime, including those of most camera phones. Once you have your video on your computer, you can drag it directly in the iMovie window. Other methods include connecting Digital Video cameras directly to your Mac and have iMovie control them as well as import the video contained on them. Many new video cameras record their raw footage to built in hard drives or recordable DVD's which can be connected to you computer, and them imported directly into iMovie. YouTube is a popular video sharing website. However, the video format is Flash based and not compatible with iMovie unless you convert it with a special program such as TubeSock

Audio also can be found in many places including CD's and online from websites sharing royalty free audio. Commercial CD's can be used in projects, however, before using the commercial audio check that you are not breaking copyright laws. Home projects are not usually a problem but if you are going to share the project to a wide audience you may run into trouble. Click here to access royalty-free audio.
